Love

To a Lady, saying she knew I Lov'd her

by John Hopkins fl. 1700

From Amasia (1700), Vol. II

Love

It may be so! I fear, it must be so;
You, who receive the Heart, must surely know.
We think not, often, when some toy we drop,
But they must needs perceive, who take it up.
Mine does so like a very trifle show,
It is not worth your pains, to stoop so low.
But if to lift the worthless toy you Deign,
O never hurl it from your Arms again.
