Love
Odes 1.19 (Creech): Mater Saeva Cupidinum
Translated by Thomas Creech (1684) · From Odes, Book I (Creech, 1684)
THe cruel Mother of Desires
And wanton Youth reproves,
And bids me rais'd by Bacchus Fires
Restore my self to my forsaken Loves:
Fair Glycera my wish provokes
More white than polisht Marble Stone,
Inviting coy, and slippery looks,
Coy looks, too slippery to be gaz'd upon.
Now Venus leaves her Cyprian Seats,
And fills my Soul with all her heats;
Bids me not mind the Parthian force,
When dreadful on his Flying Horse
He makes his proud, and conquering retreats.
All that I think on must be Love;
Bring Wine, my Boys, an Altar rear,
A tender Lamb perhaps may move;
And make the angry Goddess less severe.
Codex Note
To GLYCERA. He confesseth his Love.
