Love

Inscription for a Reed-House

by Edward Jerningham 1737?–1812

From Poems by Mr. Jerningham, a new edition (London: J. Robson, 1796), ECCO-TCP K107811

Love

Say, if to shun the noisy day,
The summer sun's oppressive ray,
Thou visit'st Contemplation's cell,
Here tarry—she'll repay thee well:
For she can bid each passion cease,
And sooth the troubled heart to peace,
Can to thy sober wishes yield
Contentment's flow'r and Wisdom's shield.
