Love

At Early Morning

by Herzog Johann von Brabant c. 1253 – 1294

Translated by Frank C. Nicholson (1907) · From Old German Love Songs (1907)

Love

At early morning I arose
On a day in May,
And to a pleasant orchard-close
I would go to play.
There I found three maidens gay;
One by one they sang this glee:
Harbalorifee, harbalorifee, harbalorifee!

When I saw the plants that sprang
In the orchard there,
And hearkened to the songs they sang,
Those three maidens fair,
My heart grew blithe and free from care,
And I, too, must sing this glee:
Harbalorifee, harbalorifee, harbalorifee!

Then to one I made salute,
The loveliest to view!
Round her waist my arm I put
Without more ado.
Fain I would have kissed her too.
Quoth she then, "Let be, let be!"
Harbalorifee, harbalorifee, harbalorifee!
