A Camping Place
Translated by Nina Salaman (1924) · From Selected Poems of Jehudah Halevi (Jewish Publication Society, 1924)
Fair and good it is to hold a camping place within Thine house,
For the people in whose midst Thy name doth rest;
That Name whose dwelling is the infinite space— though He
Is found within the contrite heart and with the humble man.
And heaven’s heights cannot contain Him, even though
He came down upon Sinai and abode in a bush.
His way is very near and it is very far,
For all that He doeth is for the sake of all that is, and for His own sake.
Lo, upon my heart is a thought from my God;
Yea, also upon my tongue is an answer from the Lord.
