On relapsing into Sin

by Sir William Killigrew 1606–1695

From Mid-night and Daily Thoughts (1694)

Religion

Tho' Piety and Grace in hearts prevail,
Our Fancies and our Natures are so frail,
That ev'ry object of our old desires,
Are ready to unkindle such new fires,
That few good Men are found, who dare to say,
They really desire to die this day.
