On Pride's Kindred

by Sir William Killigrew 1606–1695

From Mid-night and Daily Thoughts (1694)

Religion

Pride's next of kin, are such as do despise
Their Neighbours, for the Motes in their dark Eyes;
Who first their own Beams should remove, then learn:
That Rule, by which they may such Motes discern,
And by this caution constantly prevent
Such rash Censures, that do raise discontent
Between good Friends, who seldom will endure
A blind Man's Precepts, till himself he cure.
