by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Heroic Idyls (1863)

Let alone, my old friend, our best poet ; ask Parr
If I keep not stout harness well buckled for war.
Of the birch in my field I have wasted no twig
On a petulant Jeffrey or any such prig ;
But run not you foul on the wise and the kind,
Or you'll soon have to clap your ten fingers be- hind.
