Doctor'd by Bacon and Montaigne

by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Works and Life, ed. Forster, vol. VIII (1876)

Living

Doctor'd by Bacon and Montaigne
My eyebrows may sprout forth again,
Worne by hard rubbing to make out
Plato's interminable doubt.
Around him were some clever folks
Until they stumbled into jokes;
Incontinent I quitted these
To stroll with Aristophanes.
I'd rather sup on cold potato,
Than on a salmon cookt by Plato,
Who, always nice but never hearty,
Says Homer shall not join the party.
