The Mind

Thief in the Night

by D. H. Lawrence 1885–1930

From New Poems (1918)

The MindLove

Last night a thief came to me
And struck at me with something dark.
I cried, but no one could hear me,
I lay dumb and stark.

When I awoke this morning
I could find no trace;
Perhaps 'twas a dream of warning,
For I've lost my peace.

Two quatrains: a thief comes in the night and strikes with something dark, and in the morning there is no trace. 'I've lost my peace.'
