Living

Out of Office

by Li Shih-chih d. AD 747

Translated by Herbert A. Giles (1898) · From Chinese Poetry in English Verse (1898)

Living

For my betters — my office resigned —
I make way,
And seek with the wine-cup to shorten the day.
You ask for the friends who once thronged in my hall:
Alas! with my place they have gone, one and all.
