Love

Love is Cruel, Love is Sweet

by Thomas MacDonagh 1878–1916

From Poetical Works (1916): Lyrical Poems: Early Poems

Love

Love is cruel, love is sweet, —
Cruel, sweet.
Lovers sigh till lovers meet,
Sigh and meet —
Sigh and meet, and sigh again —
Cruel sweet ! O sweetest pain !

Love is blind — but love is sly,
Blind and sly.
Thoughts are bold, but words are shy-
Bold and shy —
Bold and shy, and bold again —
Sweet is boldness, — shyness pain.
