Book VIII, Epigram 50 (Ker)
Translated by Walter C. A. Ker (1919–20) · From Epigrams (Loeb, 1919–20)
Great as was the storied feast for triumph over the Giants, and great as was to all the High gods that night on which the good Sire reclined at table with the common crowd of gods, and Fauns had licence to call on Jove for wine; so great a banquet, Caesar, celebrates thy laurels won: our joys make glad the very gods themselves. Every knight feasts along with thee, the people too, and the Fathers, and Rome together with her Chief partakes ambrosial fare. Large things didst thou promise: how much greater hast thou given! A dole was promised us, a banquet has been given.
