Book IX, Epigram 45 (Ker)
Translated by Walter C. A. Ker (1919–20) · From Epigrams (Loeb, 1919–20)
A soldier, Marcellinus, you had endured of late the cold of the Northern Wain, and the slow-circling stars of Getic skies: behold, how near the compass of your eyes are now Prometheus' crag, and the fabled mount! When you shall have seen the rocks that echoed with the old man's groans, you will say, "He himself was harder still." And this you may add: "He who could endure such things was fit to mould the race of man."
