Book IX, Epigram 64 (Ker)
Translated by Walter C. A. Ker (1919–20) · From Epigrams (Loeb, 1919–20)
Caesar, deigning to descend to the features of great Hercules, gives a new temple to the Latin Way, where the traveller, on his journey to Trivia's woody realm, reads the eighth milestone from the Queen City. Aforetime was Alcides worshipped with prayer and full blood of victims; now he, the lesser, himself worships a greater Alcides. Of him, the greater, one man begs large wealth, another begs honours; to him, the lesser, carelessly he makes his more trifling prayers.
