Book X, Epigram 25 (Ker)
Translated by Walter C. A. Ker (1919–20) · From Epigrams (Loeb, 1919–20)
If Mucius, whom of late you saw one morning in the arena, when he laid his hand upon the fire, seem to you enduring, and unflinching, and strong, you have the intelligence of Abdera's rabble. For, when it is said to you, while the torturing tunic is by you, "Burn your hand," it is the bolder thing to say "I refuse."
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
