Now grown old, Ladon, the master of a boat on Tiber, bought some land near his beloved stream. As Tiber often o'erflowing was drowning it with rushing waters, and with a winter flood usurping the tilled fields, he filled with stones his boat, now past service, that stood on the high bank, and opposed it as a barrier to the waters. So lie averted the deluge. Who could believe it.? The sinking of his ship brought succour to its owner!
