Love

The Message

by Meinloh von Sevelingen fl. c. 1150–1175

Translated by Frank C. Nicholson (1907) · From Old German Love Songs (1907)

Love

I saw Summer's messengers, flowers as red as red could be.
Knowest thou, fair lady, what a knight hath offered thee?
His service all in secret Ne'er was his joy so great.
Now his heart is heavy, since he quitted thee of late.
Now make him glad and joyous e'er this summer-tide pass by!
Small will be his pleasure,
Till to his heart's contentment within thine arm at length he lie.
