Love

Book V, 239

by Paul the Silentiary d. c. 575

Translated by W. R. Paton (1916–18) · From The Greek Anthology (Loeb, vol. I, 1916)

Love

The raging flame is extinct ; I suffer no longer, O Cypris ; but Iam dying of cold. For after having devoured my flesh, this bitter love, panting hard in his greed, creeps threugh my bones and vitals. So the altar fire, when it hath lapped up all the sacrifice, cools down of its own accord for lack of fuel to feed it.
