by Francis Quarles 1592–1644

From Divine Fancies (1633), Book II

Religion

When as the Scripture opens to mine eyes,
I see my Lord in's Bed: But when I meet
Th' Apocrypha at th'end, me thinks it lyes,
Like his well countnanc'd Page, at the Beds feet;
Who wears his Lords old Cloths, made lesse; & sayes
His owne Inventions in his Masters Phrase.
