Book I, 36: On Scriptum est

by Francis Quarles 1592–1644

From Divine Fancies (1633), Book I

Religion

Some words excell in vertue, and discover
A rare conclusion, thrice repeated over.
Our Saviour thrice was tempted: thrice represt
Th'assaulting tempter with thrice SCRIPTVM EST.
If thou would'st keepe thy soule secure from harme,
Tho know'st the words: It is a potent Charme.
