Book IV, 101: On a waking Conscience

by Francis Quarles 1592–1644

From Divine Fancies (1633), Book IV

Religion

Is like a Member that's benumb'd with sleepe;
Which, as it gathers Blood, and wakes agen,
It shoots, and pricks, and feeles as big as ten.
