Living

Dame Fortune

by Rubin fl. c. 1180–1210

Translated by Frank C. Nicholson (1907) · From Old German Love Songs (1907)

Living

No man should ever quite despair,
Though in hard case he chance to live.
His griefs discreetly let him bear;
This counsel to myself I give.
Dame Fortune's shyer than a deer,
And is my foe as well, I fear.
I ever follow up her tread
And near her have I often drawn,—
Then with her wiles she speeds ahead!
