Death & Dying

Still in His Dead Hand Clench'd Remain the Strings

by Sir Walter Scott 1771–1832

From Songs from the Waverley Novels (Poetical Works, Oxford 1904)

Death & Dying

STILL in his dead hand clench'd remain the strings
That thrill his father's heart -- e'en as the limb,
Lopp'd off and laid in grave, retains, they tell us,
Strange commerce with the mutilated stump,
Whose nerves are twingeing still in maim'd existence.
