Sir Walter Scott

1771–1832

Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) was a Scottish poet and novelist whose verse romances — The Lay of the Last Minstrel, Marmion, The Lady of the Lake — made him the best-selling poet in Europe before Byron eclipsed him, and whose Waverley novels effectively invented the historical novel.

Trained as a lawyer in Edinburgh, Scott drew on a lifelong passion for Scottish Border ballads and Highland history; a private financial ruin late in life led him to write at a furious pace to pay off his debts, at the cost of his health.
