Nature

The Deadliest Snakes Are Those Which, Twined 'Mongst Flowers

by Sir Walter Scott 1771–1832

From Songs from the Waverley Novels (Poetical Works, Oxford 1904)

Nature

THE deadliest snakes are those which, twined 'mongst flowers,
Blend their bright colouring with the varied blossoms,
Their fierce eyes glittering like the spangled dew-drop ;
In all so like what nature has most harmless,
That sportive innocence, which dreads no danger,
Is poison'd unawares.
