Living

Why, Now I Have Dame Fortune by the Forelock

by Sir Walter Scott 1771–1832

From Songs from the Waverley Novels (Poetical Works, Oxford 1904)

Living

WHY, now I have Dame Fortune by the forelock,
And if she 'scapes my grasp, the fault is mine ;
He that hath buffeted with stern adversity
Best knows to shape his course to favouring breezes.
