Love

The Fang Yéw Ts‘éoh Ch‘aou

by Shi Jing (The Book of Songs) poems c. 1000–600 BC; compilation traditionally ascribed to Confucius

Translated by James Legge (1876) · From The She King (1876), Part I, Book XII

Love

The magpies’ nests are on the bank ;
On heights the lovely pea grows rank ;
While withered my heart is and blank.
Who wiled my Love away?

The temple path its fine tiles shows;
On heights the ribbon-plant bright grows ;
While my breast heaves with sorrow’s throes.
Who led his heart astray ?
