Ode C: Say to al-Muthallam and Malik son
Translated by Sir Charles James Lyall (1918) · From The Mufaddaliyat (1918)
Say to al-Muthallam and Malik son of Hind — ' If thou desirest to assail our strength, come on !
' Thou shalt find among us what our enemies have to face, and thou shalt be given a morning draught from a cup the dregs of which are bitter as colocynth.
' We will present to the [enemy's] troop, what time the spears meet in conflict, a thrust like the blazing of a flaming fire.
' Of us are horsemen in Shajnah, and adh-Dhinab, and 'Uta'id, like the blackness of thick darkness ;
' And in Darghad and on as-Sudairah are they ready, and in Dhu Amarr, where their women-kind have never been divided as spoil [among a victorious foe] '.
