Living

Host and Guest

by Spervogel fl. c. 1170–1190

Translated by Frank C. Nicholson (1907) · From Old German Love Songs (1907)

Living

Be the weather what it may,
The guest must rise at break of day.
Dry-shod oft the host may sit,
When the guest must up and quit
The quarters where he's staying.
Whoe'er in his old age would be
A host, must start in youth without delaying!
