by Algernon Charles Swinburne 1837–1909

From Poems & Ballads (Second Series)

Religion

Surely with winnowing of the glimmering wind

Begins in heaven that sings the dark to death.
And all the night wherein men groaned and sinned
Sickens at heart to hear what sundawn saith.
