Algernon Charles Swinburne

1837–1909

Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837–1909) was an English poet notorious in his own day for the sensuous, metrically dazzling, and often scandalous verse of Poems and Ballads.

An ardent republican, he also wrote fervent political verse cheering Italian unification and liberty, alongside a huge later output of odes, elegies, and sonnets.
