Maxims of Theognis: A young woman, look you
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
A young woman, look you, is not an expedient thing for an old man: for she, like a light boat, does not heed the rudder, nor do anchors hold her: but, having burst her fastenings, oft in the nights she hath another harbour.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
