Maxims of Theognis: No one of men will
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
No one of men will either be, or hath been, born, who will go down to Hades pleasing to all. For not even he who reigns over mortals and immortals, Jove, son of Cronus, can please all mortals.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
