Maxims of Theognis: By faith have I lost
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
By faith have I lost wealth, and by unbelief preserved it: but the counsel of both is difficult. All this my property is with the crows and in ruin; nor is any of the immortal blessed gods to blame in my judgment: but man’s violence, and much gain, and wrong have thrust me out of many good things into poverty.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
