Fragment II: My heart exults the lively call obeying
Translated by John Hookham Frere (1842; Bohn 1856) · From Fragments of Theognis (Frere, 1842)
Social Commentaries
My heart exults the lively call obeying,
When the shrill merry pipes are sweetly playing :
With these to chaunt aloud, or to recite,
To carol and carouse is my delight :
Or in a stedfast tone, bolder and higher,
To temper with a touch the manly lyre.
