Maxims of Theognis: I will not go, neither

by Theognis of Megara fl. 6th century BC

Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)

Living

I will not go, neither shall a tyrant be lamented by me, nor go beneath the earth with wailing over his tomb. No, nor would he, if I were dead, either be grieved, or let fall warm tears adown his eyes.

This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
