Riddle 12

by Carolyn Wells 1862–1942

From At the Sign of the Sphinx (Second Series)

Living

When out from the clouds the sun had burst,
My first of the people went to my first.

My second and third may be covered with sod,
And one in each town is given to God.

My whole is a dire and terrible deed
Of which in History we may read.
