Riddle 120

by Carolyn Wells 1862–1942

From At the Sign of the Sphinx (Second Series)

Living

My first bears many a noble name,
Two letters add, ’t is still the same.

I saw my second in dark waters
It was the last of noble daughters.

My whole, though very picturesque,
May be quite ugly and grotesque;
And Shakespeare used the word to mean
The witches in a ghastly scene.
