Proverbs 28: By young corrupters lured

by Charles Wesley 1707–1788

From Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (1762) · Osborn ed., vol. 9 (1870)

Religion

By young corrupters lured
To bolder lengths in vice,
I shrunk protected, and secured
Through sacred cowardice.

By Moses doom'd to die
O how was I distress'd.
My fears of death, and judgment nigh,
A thousand-fold increased!

My inbred hell was stirr'd
And horribly afraid,
I saw the just, avenging sword
Hang o'er my guilty head.

Of sad tormenting fear
The spirit I received,
And many a miserable year
In cruel bondage lived.
