Matthew 27:5: Such, miser, is thy end, or worse

by Charles Wesley 1707–1788

From Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (1762) · Osborn ed., vol. 10 (1871)

Religion

Such, miser, is thy end, or worse,
Who wealth unjustly dost obtain,
By conscience gnaw'd with late remorse.
At death thou wouldst repent in vain.
In vain wouldst benefit the poor
By what thou canst no longer keep:
Self-murder'd soul, thy doom deplore,
And plunged in hell for ever weep!
