Enrobed and crown'd in mockery
Thou dost for Adam's sin atone,
Who fain would independent be,
And live like God supreme alone:
With pride entail'd on all the kind,
We too would reign admired adored;
But here the remedy we find
The meekness of our humbled Lord.

Thou wouldst not from the people take
A crown without reproach or pain,
But scoff'd and wounded for our sake
Thou dost the grief and shame sustain;
Thou dost the crown of thorns receive,
To make Thy patient kingdom known,
And lo, with Thee we die and live,
We suffer and ascend Thy throne.
