St. Ambrose of Milan

c. 340–397

Ambrose was born about 340 in Gaul and became Bishop of Milan in 374; he died on Easter Eve, 397. John Brownlie's notes record that he introduced antiphonal chanting into the Western Church.

Latin hymns in his manner were long called Ambrosian, and few can be certainly assigned to him. This page holds only the two that John Brownlie (1896) gives to him without real doubt, Deus creator omnium and Splendor paternae gloriae, in Brownlie's English.

  1. Thy works, O God, Thy name extol
  2. From the Father's throne descending
  3. Aeterne rerum conditor
  4. Splendor paternae gloriae
