Matthew Arnold (1822–1888) was an English poet and cultural critic, Professor of Poetry at Oxford.

His poems — among them ‘Dover Beach’ and ‘The Scholar-Gipsy’ — register the anxious loss of religious certainty at the heart of the Victorian age.
