Wilfrid Scawen Blunt
Wilfrid Scawen Blunt (1840–1922) was an English poet, diplomat and landowner, born in Sussex and educated for the diplomatic service, in which he served in several European capitals before leaving it. With his wife, Lady Anne Blunt, he travelled in Arabia and the Middle East and founded the Crabbet Arabian Stud at his Sussex estate.
He was a vocal opponent of British imperial policy in Egypt, India and Ireland, and was imprisoned in Ireland in 1888 for his part in the land agitation, writing the sonnets of In Vinculis there. His love poetry, collected as The Love Sonnets of Proteus (1881), and his later sequences were gathered with his narrative and political poems in the two-volume Poetical Works of 1914, the text used here.
