Gavin Douglas

c. 1474–1522

Gavin Douglas (c. 1474–1522) was a Scottish poet, churchman and statesman, a son of Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus, and from 1516 Bishop of Dunkeld. He was educated at St Andrews and later took a prominent part in the politics of the minority of James V.

His Eneados, completed in 1513, is a Middle Scots verse translation of Virgil's Aeneid with an original prologue to each book and Maffeo Vegio's thirteenth book; it is generally counted the first complete translation of the Aeneid into any form of English. It is read in the archive under Virgil's Aeneid, beside the English versions by later translators.
