Joseph von Eichendorff
Joseph von Eichendorff was born at Lubowitz in Silesia and became one of the best loved poets of German Romanticism. His songs of woods, wandering and longing were set by many composers, and he also wrote the tale Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts.
James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
