Eknath

1548–1599

Eknath (Ekanath) was a Marathi saint-poet of Paithan, a disciple of the teacher Janardan, and a leading figure in the devotional (bhakti) tradition of Maharashtra between Jnanesvar and Tukaram. He is remembered for his Marathi commentary on the eleventh book of the Bhagavata Purana and for his abhangs. The dates 1548-99 are those printed by Macnicol; other authorities place his birth earlier, around 1533.

Macnicol's Psalms of Maratha Saints (1919) gives seven of his pieces, from both his commentary and his short songs.

  1. God the Known and God the Unknown
  2. The Ninefold Path of Bhakti
  3. The Scorner
  4. Men's Reviling
  5. "God Dwells in All"
  6. The Spiritual Pandhari
  7. "Saints Great of Heart"
