Empedocles
Empedocles of Acragas (Agrigentum) in Sicily was a Greek philosopher, physician and poet of the fifth century BC. He wrote in hexameter verse and taught that all things are made from four roots, fire, air, earth and water, which Love draws together and Strife pulls apart in endless cycles.
This archive carries the 1 epigram ascribed to the poet in the third volume of W. R. Paton's prose translation of the Greek Anthology (Book IX: 569), and William Ellery Leonard's verse translation of the surviving fragments of his poems On Nature and The Purifications.
