Şeyh Galip

1757–1799

Mehmed Esad, known as Şeyh Galip or Galib Dede (1757–1799), was a Mevlevi dervish and sheikh of the Galata convent in Istanbul, and one of the foremost poets of the late Ottoman Romantic school. Sultan Selim III conferred on him the office of sheikh.

His masterpiece is the mystical romance Husn ü Aşk ('Beauty and Love'), from which two passages are given here. E. J. W. Gibb, who gave the first English account of his diwan, praised the strong and glowing verse of his lyric poems.

  1. While the Lovers Circle Here in Mystic Dance
  2. Those Cries That Sound Throughout the Fast
  3. Out on This Jugglery
  4. We Reached the Loved One's Blissful Gate
  5. The Song of Love's Nurse
  6. Sweet Were Those Moments When the Heart Was Gay
